What Information Is Needed to Evaluate a Gas Assist Molding Project?
Project Evaluation Guide · Gas Assist Injection · gasassistinjection.com
A gas-assisted molding project is evaluated in two parts: is the process right for your part, and what will the mold and production cost. Both answers depend on the information you provide. The more complete and precise the inputs, the faster and more accurate the feasibility review, mold design and quotation.
01 · Why it matters
Why the information matters
A GAIM evaluation is really three questions:
- Is gas assist right for this part? Depends on geometry, wall thickness and material.
- What should the mold look like? Gas channel layout, gate and gas-inlet placement, venting.
- What will it cost and when? Tooling, cycle, material, quantities and schedule.
None of these can be answered well with partial input. A few missing details — a material, a wall thickness, a target quantity — are enough to turn a confident recommendation into a guess.
The rule is simple: send whatever you have now, and we will tell you what is still missing. It is easier to refine a partial package than to evaluate an empty one.
02 · Part
Part information
Geometry & drawings
- 3D file — STEP, STL, IGES or native CAD.
- 2D drawings with dimensions and tolerances.
- Wall thickness, rib and boss details.
- Gate and parting-line constraints, if known.
Material
- Resin grade / trade name, or the properties you need.
- Color and any fillers (glass, talc, etc.).
- If unsure, we can recommend from function.
Geometry is the single most important input for GAIM. If the part has a continuous thick section, gas has a stable path; if not, gas assist may not be suitable at all.
03 · Requirements
Functional & quality requirements
Surface & appearance
- Show-surface and texture requirements.
- Gloss, color and visible-defect limits.
- Sink-mark tolerance on thick areas.
Structural & assembly
- Load, stiffness or strength the part must meet.
- Critical assembly and mating features.
- Critical dimensions and tolerances.
GAIM hollows the core of thick sections, so functional requirements decide whether the hollow is acceptable and where it can sit. The more you tell us about how the part is used and assembled, the better the channel placement.
04 · Commercial
Production & commercial details
Production
- Expected quantities (per order and per year).
- Target schedule for tooling and production.
- Delivery location and any incoterm preference.
Commercial
- Target part cost or budget, if set.
- Packaging and export requirements.
- Quality and certification needs (PPAP, UL, RoHS, etc.).
Volumes decide whether GAIM pays for itself: on thick-wall parts, the material and cycle savings usually cover the extra tooling once volumes are meaningful.
05 · Checklist
A ready-to-send checklist
Copy this list into your inquiry, tick what you have, and attach the files. It takes two minutes and gets you a real answer.

06 · What happens next
What happens after you send it
1Feasibility reviewWe check whether gas assist suits the geometry, material and targets.
2DFM & proposalWe recommend process, gas channel layout and mold approach, and flag risks.
3Quote & timelineWe provide mold and part pricing plus a realistic schedule.
For clear, complete inquiries we typically respond with a feasibility opinion and a structured quotation within a few working days.
07 · Bottom line
Bottom line
The quality of a GAIM evaluation is only as good as the inputs. Provide the part files, material, functional requirements and production numbers — and you get a confident answer on feasibility, mold design, cost and schedule. Leave them out, and the answer comes back with “it depends.”
At Gas Assist Injection, we evaluate every project in our own factory, with both conventional and gas-assisted capability, so the recommendation is based on your part — not on pushing one process.
